6 Telltale Signs Your Double Glazing No Longer Works

Double Glazing Door

Figuring out whether your double glazing is still functional is essential if you want to properly insulate your home. But, of course, it can sometimes fail.

So, do you need window replacements? Here are some tell-tale signs that you might:

1. Condensation Between Panes

Sometimes, you’ll notice condensation between double glazing window panes. If you see this, then it is highly likely that the unit has failed and needs to be re-gassed, re-sealed, or replaced outright if it is old.

When fogging or condensation occurs inside the panes, between the glass layers, it means that the seal keeping the regular air out is broken. Moisture has been allowed to get in, displacing the thermally efficient (and expensive) argon or krypton gas. Usually, the only option is to replace the unit.

2. Increased Noise Pollution

Another sign you have a problem with your double glazing is if you can hear more noise coming in from outside. Again, if sound is able to pass through with ease, it usually means that there is something wrong with the seal.

Normally, double glazing dampens sound and keeps street noise out (which is one of the reasons it is so popular). However, it could simply be because it is no longer holding onto the gas that insulates it.

3. Higher Energy Bills

Indirect evidence you have a double glazing issue is higher energy bills over the winter. Paying more for heating could mean that your windows aren’t maintaining their seals properly.

Sometimes, you can apply a quick fix and sort this problem out immediately. For example, you might have worn rubber seals, or the frame of the window might be loose in the surrounding mortar. However, if the problem is with the gap between the panes themselves, that can be significantly harder to fix.

4. Drafts

Another issue you could run into is drafts or cold spots. If you notice a cool breeze that feels like it is coming from outside, that could be an indication that there’s something seriously wrong with your windows.

Drafts don’t usually occur when double-glazed windows are installed properly. Sometimes there can be small gaps, but that’s often a sign of poor workmanship. The more likely scenario is that your property has moved over time, and that shifting has created gaps where drafts can develop. Therefore, you’ll need to identify and fill these before they get any worse.

5. Trouble Closing Windows

Related to this issue is the fact that you can sometimes have trouble opening and closing windows on your property. If they are slightly off, then it can cause them to stick or jam.

Again, this could indicate damage and necessitate replacement. Alternatively, you could pull the window off the wall and then reshape the opening so it fits properly again.

6. Leaks When It Rains

Finally, leaking while it is raining is another tell-tale sign that something is wrong with your double glazing. If it is letting water in around the edges during storms, it suggests that the window has come away from its framing.
