What Equipment Do DJs Need?

DJ

Whether you are a beginner DJ or you are looking to restock your equipment, it is important to know what you need to have a successful setup for your music. This article outlines the equipment you need and what might improve your overall kit, but isn’t essential. Read on and check out if you have everything you need.

DJ Controller, turntables and CDJs

There are a few options for this part of the DJ kit, but regardless of your choice it is arguably the most important part of a DJ’s equipment, both for beginners and professionals. They simplify the mixing process and are the centre of creativity.

The basic option is a ‘controller’. The controller connects to a laptop, allowing for the easier manipulation of multiple tracks, so you can adapt your music on the spot without focusing on the technical aspects of DJing. They’re a common choice for weddings and one-off events.

Turntables are rotating circular discs that spin vinyl records. They were a classic part of early DJ culture and they are now back in fashion. They are great for DJs who want an authentic look or sound. Some turntable systems can also eliminate the need for some of the other kit (laptop, speakers).

CDJs are pro-standard DJ equipment that run off USBs or CDs, mixers and internal software. They are the most common option when it comes to nightclub DJing.

Mixer

A mixer allows DJs to play multiple tracks at once. It is used for transitions and can fade out the music and change the volume. They are also useful for people who like to create a scratch effect between multiple tunes.

Laptop and DJ software

If you’re working with a ‘controller’, you need a high-quality laptop that can run DJ software efficiently and store your music library and downloads without overheating.

Some laptops are used to run more intensive platforms, so it is worth keeping an eye out for high-functioning laptops, as this will determine the quality of the rest of your set.

Headphones

If you perform in club settings, you need to be able to hear your set as it happens, regardless of any delay or excess noise. This means the quality of the headphones with quality noise-cancelling abilities.

Extras

An audio interface

  • A device used to record certain parts of your set and share them on your or other laptops.

Speakers

  • Not always essential for a couple of reasons. They sometimes come as part of other DJ equipment; for example, turntables often have speakers. Additionally, if you perform at clubs, they may have specific speakers that they would prefer you use to match their brand and sound quality. However, if you want a full set of equipment and your turntables don’t have speakers, they are a great investment.

Get your DJ equipment

Buy DJ equipment outright

The most obvious way to get your equipment is to buy it outright. If you choose this, make sure you source it from a reliable company that can help you or guide you through what works for you.

For a more affordable option, some companies sell second-hand DJ equipment. A good-quality company will ensure its second-hand products are fully functional and in good condition.

Rent DJ equipment

Another more affordable option is to rent or look for DJ equipment hire services. This is a great option for some elements of the equipment set. For example, you may want to buy a laptop and a controller outright, but you could rent other equipment like turntables or mixers when you are doing public sets. This is a particularly good route for beginners who want to build their portfolio and find their sound without breaking the bank.

What DJ equipment is right for you?

Figuring out which equipment is right for you will depend on your budget, your sound and the types of settings you play in. Take these tips on board, make a list of your priorities and reflect on what you need. Then,  research good supplier companies and equipment brands before making your decision.
